Elise watched a thickset man step aboard the bus and introduced himself to Carol Van Cliff. After the niceties were over, they set off again and he took the microphone and introduced himself.

Elise groaned as she heard a shriek from the seat in front of her.

“My voice isn’t that bad, is it?” Rob Marrack asked. His gaze travelled the bus and he noticed a child at the back waving. With a smile that deepened the grooves in his craggy face, he waved back. “Hello, Lily. When the bus stops, I’ll come see you. Okay.”

Lily grinned and excitedly jumped up in her seat and lent over to see her aunt. “It’s Poppa Rob, Aunt Elise. He’s Jill’s daddy.

Several people around them who heard the child’s comments laughed.

“Is that so? Well, Poppa Rob, as you call him, is busy right now, little one. When he’s finished, we’ll say hello. Okay? Now sit or you’ll hurt yourself.”

Lily nodded and settled contentedly back in her seat.

Elise stared at Jill’s father. There wasn’t much of a resemblance. He looked like a miner—broad, dark, and craggy. Jill was fairer and had an almost elfin quality about her. When Rob Marrack smiled, she allowed a ghost of a smile to trace her lips when she saw the replica of her lover’s lopsided grin appear. Yes, he is Jill’s father. That trait alone had hooked Elise from day one when she’d interviewed Jill for the PA’s post. Little did she know, that five years later, she’d be kissing that very mouth. Warmth filled her body when she recalled the last time they were together. She checked her watch and gave it a satisfactory nod. Soon, very soon, Jill will be close to me again. That was worth enduring a long boring bus ride any day of the week.
